When you say contractor are you referring to 1099 vs W2? They all technically do contract work but they are paid as a w2.

Travel nurses, since the beginning of covid, can indeed pull in 200k+ a year.

The majority rarely work full time. They’ll do one contract and the. Take off a few weeks or months and swing to the next one. Some do hustle and just constantly work. And even if they were 1099 it’s not that huge of difference. Maybe another 5-10% in taxes

Old college roommate, former LSU football player , has been doing this for decades, single guy(no homo,) makes pretty good cake, goes when and where he wants to, definitely a 1099 gig for him, his retirement will be however he’s handled his money over the years
