There was nothing supernatural going on in respect to the murders occurring on the farm. Niles is insane and is doing the killing, blaming it on his dead brother. The game their grandmother taught them was a sort of astral projection, but I took it as being more about imagination than the supernatural.
Thomas Tryon also wrote another great horror novel called Harvest Home.
