I'm not sure 2% or 3% is even survivable for most folks. I suspect the long distance runners do end up in the 3 1/2% to 4% range, which is very, very lean for human beings.
As a reminder (because America has gotten so fat as to lose all perspective about the subject), here are some examples and their correlation with the opposite sex (women are naturally fatter than men and that is a good thing ... up to a point ... this is what gives women their softness and curves):
A shite ton of Americans are in those last couple of columns on the right.
(ETA: Reminder not to confuse BF % with BMI. They are different scales, measuring different things and are not comparable, certainly not directly and without context.)
