In the show he's recovering from a surfing accident and getting hooked on pain pills. In the book he's recovering from the events that take place in The Lincoln Lawyer movie, if I remember correctly the defendant from the LL was going to kill his ex and daughter and also committed the murder that his innocent client was convicted of. So, yeah his shite isn't together after that. I do think the surf accident doesn't really have the same punch as the events of the LL so his trauma doesn't really come off the same.
