That indicates a trend not just for ESPN but for cable/satellite services more generally. Since you can't buy cable service ala carte, you're forced to take whatever packages they offer. Dropping it all drops ESPN.

Definitely true to a large degree. However, maybe when your business model is hemorrhaging users, pissing off half of them is not the smartest decision.

Oh, I'm not suggesting this was all cord cutters. I'm saying people have been getting fed up with ALL of it. From the nonstop woke nonsense, to the inability to choose networks, etc. In this case, if you want to drop ESPN, you basically have to drop basic cable, since you can't chose to drop only ESPN, or any network for that matter. My guess is that if cable companies allowed ala carte pricing you'd see an obvious drop in networks people hate or don't want to fund any longer.

For me, it was gradual. I dropped Cox Cable for cost and no longer wanting so many channels and tried YouTube TV for a bit, only to realize that I didn't even want/need that and dropped it all by midsummer 2020. By then, I was glad I had.
