Look, I understand what she's trying to say and partially agree. Some people get too complacent when they're in one spot and, theoretically, the poorer performing schools need the better teachers. But, like she plainly laid out by her own admission, she basically doesn't give a frick about her job other than her days off and her paycheck. If that's what her great plan produces, then it's probably not a good one.

It’s a vicious cycle.

The poor schools attract shitty teachers that are only in it for the paycheck/benefits. Those shitty teachers, in turn, ensure that the schools will continue to perform poorly.

I’m not really sure you can put a pin on an exact date when the EBRPSS fell into this cycle. I graduated from Belaire HS in 1984, and my sister graduated in 1992. We both got good HS educations from that school, as did the solid majority of our classmates. Educations that prepared us for college. The teachers cared, and parents were involved. The decline appears to have been steady and gradual…but from what point, I couldn’t really say.

All I know is that there appears to be no pulling out of the cycle, and thusly, no saving the system. The parents that care are putting their kids in private schools. Teachers who are worth a damn are following suit.

Ascension Parish is offering current teachers 10k more a year to go and teach in Donaldsonville because that area cannot keep teachers. Most of the people going are teachers near retirement who are looking for that extra money so their retirement can be higher.

The two largest factors are parents and school board administrators.

You can't control parents and their lack of interest in their own children.

You need people at the top that are willing to make those tough decisions and do what's best for the district as a whole. Unfortunately, EBRPSS isn't interested in the kids under their care, but rather doing everything they can to protect their image and their personal interests and it shows. The fact that CB is blaming charter schools tells you everything you need to know. It's never their fault and it's always someone else's responsibility to fix the problem. If nothing else, she really is a true representative of her constituency.
