Because they got used to living on less. Near the bottom you have to put a lot of work in to raise your standard of living just a little over that of 100% leech. That disincentive got a lot worse with the turnip, but it's been there for decades and people just adjusted to it.

Ok. I'm 47. I quit working on Feb 28, 2020 right before the pandemic kickoff.

I'm fortunate enough to have made some wise and lucky investments over 25 years and have a good income. My wife works because she enjoys her job but she could quit any day she felt like it. She's 41.

I could be in the workforce grinding away. I could be helping the GDP, I could be paying more taxes, etc. I could also be bring in additional wealth.

But I did the math 2 years ago and realized that my income from my job was not enough to justify working. We didn't need the money and my time was better spent hunting and fishing and enjoying life. I tell people that I do truly have the best life of anyone I know.
