The ROKU is always a safe bet. And, IMO, it's the most "independent."
Apple, Amazon, Google (Android TV and Chromecast) all have interests other than just streaming.
I actually LIKE Android TV the best, and the Shield TV kicks arse. But when asked, I recommend Roku. Just a very easy, solid choice.

my biggest gripe with shield (regular or pro) is that it eats up batteries quickly
