It goes automatically to next of kin. You do NOT have to have a named beneficiary. Although, next if kin of the beneficiary might be in play.

Alabama i think is what he said. I have no history there. In Arkansas with state farm we would send it to the estate in this case.

Nobody not named as a beneficiary is getting their hands on that money. The estate of the deceased will eventually be paid but unfortunately it’ll take an attorney’s help. The beneficiaries of the estate will be able to access the funds once the estate is settled. There is no “next of kin” involved in the payment of life insurance proceeds unless that next of kin is named as a beneficiary.
