They're talking about gas. They converted it into electrical terms. X amount of gas can produce X amount of electricity. I guess it's to make it easier to understand and make the number look bigger.
It's a lot of power
A large transmission line that runs directly from a power plant to a substation and powers an entire town is often 500 kwh. So this is equivalent to hundreds of those, or several power plants closing.
