This proves it's not just about OMB. If we accept that Trump is just too divisive, but they'll be more reasonable or sane with anyone else, it's a lie. DeSantis is all the proof you need.
MANY people (independents and moderates of both parties) are simply so put-off with Trump's obnoxious personality, and occasional outlandish, off-the-cuff comments, that they just can't get by it!
As I've already said, I've voted for him, and will again if he's the candidate in '24, BUT I'm pretty sure the dims will have a much more credible candidate next time, and they'll continue to call the shots going forward.

Oh, don't get me wrong, those people are stupid who vote for a Democrat because of mean tweets, "politically incorrect" language, etc. But those are votes that still need to be had in order to win. And frankly, that's Trump's fault. He was complacent and didn't work on his message discipline, let alone articulating his message, and he didn't win back the suburban voters. He got fat and happy, literally and figuratively. In 2016 there were over 5 million people who voted for at least 1 down-ballot R but didn't vote for him. In 2020 that number was also over 5 million.
Adapt or die.
While it's true that the media will make any Republican out to be Hitler, there are some differences.
1. DeSantis doesn't constantly step on his own dick and fall for media trap after media trap like Trump did.
2. His message discipline is much better and he knows how to articulate his message as opposed to deflecting or repeating himself. Case in point when Trump was asked why he didn't fire Fauci. He said he didn't because he was worried about the precious feelings of liberals and then went off on a rant about Fauci's shite first pitch for over a minute, which no one gives a shite about.
You win back just 2/3 of those 5 million voters who historically vote Republican but don't like Trump and the Democrats are screwed. They know this, which is why the Lincoln Project has been begging Trump to run again so he can take out potential GOP candidates who don't alienate those voters.
