Depends on the cat and the circumstances.
Hold them by the scruff of the neck, it doesn't hurt them and you can control them better. We do it in the shower, using the hose attachment, and make sure the water is warm. Use the right shampoo so you don't dry their hair and skin out, dry them good in a towel, give them a treat afterwards.

Just prepare to get soaking wet because they are likely to try to climb you to get out of the sink. The ‘neck grab’ given above is your best move. Prepare the water, grab the cat, do what you have to do.
