All I can offer is that I put a GM remanufactured transmission in my old truck and its been great. The old one had over 250k very hard miles on it though. At only 77k I wouldn't be putting another one of those in without knowing I was getting an improved part.
Generally no, but the price difference can be very significant. I wouldnt hesitate to have a very reputable shop rebuild it. I couldn't rebuild mine because the case was split.
