The American media labeled Gorbachev a “good” communist, but did their best to convince people that Yeltsin was a dangerous drunk that couldn’t be trusted.

Well Yeltsin was an alcoholic who as head of the RFSR saw an opportunity to seize power by going behind Gorbachev's back. Regardless of how it's looked at now, for a variety of reasons at the time the Bush administration did not want a breakup of the USSR.
