I did some research on the rules of our game of Football, as the rules were in 1905. The game had developed the concept of "permanent possession" by then. There were Downs. You had to gain 5 or 10 yards for a First Down (I can't remember which). There were either 3 or 4 Downs (I can't remember which). I can't remember exactly which because the rules changed between 1893 and 1905. The rules were definitely not completely static during those years.

Blocking was allowed. In fact, the Rushing plays of modern Football, where the ball is handed off and the Running Back carries, is similar to the plays you'd see in 1905.

On Defense, the position of End was critical. The End lined up before the Snap looking directly towards the Center. Just like today, the End's job was to turn all plays INSIDE and not allow the ball carrier to get Outside.

Just like Rugby, a good play was to send your Offensive End running like hell downfield so that a perfectly timed punt could catch the Defense off-guard so that the Punt could be fielded downfield. I'm still trying to figure out the rules on what happened after your End recovers the punt from your Quarterback, but, I think that the Offense would retain possession and have a First Down because this "Punt" was a live ball that belonged to whomever recovered it - Offense or Defense.

It was an interesting game.

"Three Yards and a Cloud of Dust" was an accurate description of the game when it was 3 Downs to gain 5 yards for a First Down. If you could gain 3 yards on every play under that rule, you couldn't lose, right?

Also, when the ball went out of bounds, they used something similar to the Rugby "Line Out" to put the ball back in play. It's not clear from the writings I've seen on the game as it was in 1905.
