A 243 is fine for deer hunting. Just any cheap bolt action with a scope would be fine. I always carry an extendable aiming rod or a stick in the ground to steady the crosshairs. Can't hold scope steady like in my younger days.

I don't see why not. Plenty of people getting them with the .223 so the .243 shouldn't be an issue as long as you shoot straight.
I can't see wanting to carry my big heavy 30-06 in my 70s (if I get there).
