this ^^^^^^^
and tell them straight up front you dont have dental insurance so everything is out of pocket so you arent paying for anything extra. most of them, once they know insurance isnt there to be fleeced, will give you the normal price for things and only do whats needed

One of my kids as had dental checkups every six months for 25 years so not likely to have had any serious problems. His dentist retired, so he went to s “chain “ place because of convenience for his next checkup. They “found” he needed $6000 worth of work, he passed, and found a private practice dentist, had no sides that needed attention.

I made this mistake when I needed to find a dentist as an adult. Hadn’t seen anyone since high school and was having tooth pain.
The chain dentist tried pushing a fancy antibiotic injection treatment for my gums. Instead of fillings, they did a crown and inlay. She also removed all of my older mercury amalgam fillings. When I got the bill I was completely estimate I was talked into applying for one of those care credit cards to pay for most of the work.
The crown was nothing but trouble. She didn’t grind down the tooth properly, and the crown popped off 3-4 times over the years before I finally had a new one made by my current dentist.
