Amnesia the dark descent

I’ve been trying to play it on hard. If you die do you have to start from the beginning because that’s what’s been happening and I’ve had to start from scratch 3 times. First off it’s not very clear how I’m dying other that maybe my sanity is getting too low but there is no way I can help it with the lack of light from the sources I’ve found including my lamp.
