Normandy is doable as a day trip. We caught a train to Caen where our guide picked us up. We spent time in Sainte Mere Eglise, then on to Utah beach where we ate lunch as well as toured, then to Omaha Beach and Pointe du Hoc. Our last stop was to the American Cemetery near Omaha. It was a great tour which ended around 5:30 p.m. We picked up some light dinner things and a couple of good bottles of wine for the train ride back to Paris, getting there before 8. I would do it again.

Could you provide the Tour Guide you used? I'll be making the trip with my wife and we had a similar plan. I found a few tour guides but looking for a recommendation. TIA.

Highly recommend you do at least a night, and skip Caen. I would instead say to stay a night in Bayeux. Bayeux is one of the few medieval towns that escaped WW2 without much damage. The old town is basically untouched, and the cathedral is really impressive. You should also see the tapestry. Not an all day event (tapestry) but worth an hour or so.
Recommend leaving Paris via train in the mid morning (one stop to Bayeux) and then spending the afternoon in Bayeux. Then spend a full day on a D-Day tour before either making a late night trip back to Paris or spending a second night in Bayeux.
Side note: whenever you are in France try to find the old town markers that commemorate their war dead in WW1 and WW2. Additionally, in most of their churches they have a board that lists by name and year the parish men who died in the separate wars. It really puts their losses in perspective.
