My old man was never really cruel to us, but we were scared to death to disobey (until we became teenagers).

I watched him chase down a wounded deer I shot (muzzleloader - so no quick follow-up shot) and drown it in a creek when I was about 10. When he got done he was pissed at me because he lost his favorite hat in the chase. He made me crawl through briars for an hour looking for it until he gave up.

Grandfather used to let me do some stuff that would be frowned upon now. He used to give us cigarettes to light firecrackers with. Bunch of 5-8 yr old kids running around with cigarettes in the yard. When we'd go behind a tree to take a puff and come out the other side green he would laugh.

He also taught me how to drive his truck when I was 8 or 9. He was so proud he taught me how to drive a stick at that age he made me drive him all around town to show all of his friends.

We used to do the same thing. I know there is a picture of me and my cousins holding cigarettes crouched in that firecracker stance. Concentrating on the mission, but ready to haul arse when the fuse lights.
