The only reason you get fired for something like this is if you broke the law while doing it. Petrino broke state hiring laws when he created a job for his side piece and didn’t interview more qualified candidates. Freeze broke the law by using a school-issued cell phone to hire escorts.

If this does turn out to be true, but no laws were broken, USC won’t move on.

They might if the actual contract has not yet been signed (like what happened with Mike Price). Often times these initially hired are made through a verbal agreement, MOU, etc. They are then formalized down the road. That gap between the two times can be a gray area legally.
