Why 16 Teams? (and other thoughts)

I have been an advocate for conference realignment, particularly involving the Big 10 and Pac 10, for some time. But WTF? Why the sudden idea that 16 is the magic number? 12 team conferences with a conference championship game worked well for the SEC, ACC and Big 12, IMHO. So, rather than follow that proven model with realignment that makes sense, the Pac 10 and Big 10 pull THIS!?
Other thoughts
I always thought that Colorado and BYU or Boise State to the Pac 10 made sense with TCU replacing Colorado in the Big 12.
If this goes through and we end up with 16-team Super Conferences:
a.) How many "super" conferences will their be?
b.) Could the Big East get in on the act and actually pass the Big 12 with the mass exodus that they are experiencing?
c.)My vote for new SEC teams (not that I really want them to expand: GT, USF, VT, TAMU. Texas isn't the South, but bringing in that TV market would be huge and would add a team to the Western half of the Conference. Vandy would move to the Western Division.

Neither of those two are going to the Pac10, probably ever. That's your first main mistake.

4. SEC, ACC, Pac16, Big10

Not unless a bunch of their basketball teams start playing football. They're more likely to fold as a football conference

USF isn't the best addition. If we HAVE to take 4 new teams, I'd rather get OU or Missouri than USF

Mizzou, then. I firmly believe that an SEC team should at least be in the vicinity of the South. Hell, that isn't even close enough, IMHO, but at least they are on the Mississippi. Oklahoma is just wrong. If Oklahoma leaves, there won't really be a point in having a Big 12.

It's certainly fading. I just got back into town this afternoon and find all of this is going down. I'm still processing the myriad of scenarios that could play out. Unreal!
