Why can't we play a 9 game schedule go back to playing two divisional rivals with one rotating rival. This is how I think it would work out

WEST permanent rivals
Alabama (Tennessee , Auburn)
Arkansas (Tenn, S. Car)
LSU (Fla, Auburn)
Miss State (Kentucky, Vandy)
Missouri (Kentucky, S. Car)
Ole Miss (Vandy, UGA)
Texas A&M (UGA, Fla)

EAST permanent rivals
Auburn (Alabama, LSU)
Florida (LSU, Tex A&M)
Georgia (Tex A&M, Ole Miss)
Kentucky (Miss State, Mizzou)
S. Car (Arky, Mizzou)
Tenn (Alabama, Arky)
Vandy (Ole Miss, Miss State)

If you look at it all current rivalries are maintained plus old ones that were lost are played with new ones being formed

I hate that it take forever to play all the non-permanent opponents when you only have 1 revolving game, but this is one of the better ideas I've seen. The one downer for SEC East teams is that it may take forever to get around to playing either Texas A&M or Missouri. It's a pretty good deal for SEC West teams though.

It would take 10 years to complete a rotation of playing home and away against teams from the other division. That is just way too long.

Because you'd only play your rotating non-divisional rivals twice every 10 years. If you're only playing that infrequently, you're basically not in the same conference any more.

I still don't understand why they wouldn't just put both Alabama and Auburn in the East and bring Florida to the West. That would help with the competitive balance issue, and would reunite historical rivals on both sides. Alabama would be in the same division with Auburn, Vanderbilt and Tennessee, Florida with LSU and Mississippi State, Auburn with Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee, etc. Keeping one permanent inter-divisional opponent would allow Florida and Georgia to keep playing every year, as well as LSU and Alabama.

The only annual matchups lost (or not regained) would be ones that either A) were artificially created in 1992 with the first expansion (UF-UT, LSU-Aub, Ark-Bama, Ark-Aub, etc.) or B) were already sacrificed in 2002 with the change to the current 5-1-2 format (Fla-Aub, LSU-UK, etc).

sec doesn't want a 9 game conference schedule because it means less bowl games for the conference
