Why would they get an automatic bcs berth?
they'd get one by sheer numbers, since BCS AQ determination is based on a 12 team conference
while there's adjustment from 9-12 there's no adjustment for a larger-than-12 team conference

I'm all for adding this conference merger to the BCS. Gives more teams access to the college money at the top of the bowl lists and access to recruits that normally wouldn't pick them because they're not BCS.

Here's an idea.
Take the current and projected MWC and CUSA and add two teams--LA Tech and Troy.
Have four divisions and a 2 week playoff for a BCS birth. Each team plays 5 division games in an attempt to keep some kind of continuity/rivalries alive and 3 other conference games, details don't matter now.
Seeding is not based on some geographic format but instead the standings. 1 vs 4, 3 vs 2 with higher seed getting home field in all three games.
Div A:
East Carolina
Marshall
UAB
UCF
Memphis
Troy
Div B:
Houston
Rice
SMU
Southern Miss
Tulane
Louisiana Tech
Div. C:
Air Force
New Mexico
Colorado State
Wyoming
Tulsa
UTEP
Div D:
Fresno State
Hawaii
Nevada
San Diego State
UNLV
Boise State
Then the Big 12/Big East Rejects form 12 teams in two divisions:
Cincinnati
Connecticut
Louisville
Rutgers
South Florida
West Virginia
TCU
Baylor
Iowa State
Kansas
Kansas State
Missouri

The sheer madness of this!
16-team national playoff to incorporate the bowls...first round games on campus of the higher seed so that the CUSA/MAC/Sun Belt winners get a seat the table and thumped.
Why not? Even THAT is too much opportunity and money for the big boys to give the little guy. Sad.

This is a good idea. Have two 10-12 team divisions. Play 8 inter-division games with some two cross-over games and two non-conference and then have a championship game with the winner getting an automatic BCS bid.

US senators from those states threaten congeressional hearings about the bcs being anti-trust and then you get a bcs invite.

The door opens wide for Tulane!

How the hell would you determine a champion of that thing.
I imagine it would be something similar to Major League Baseball before interleague play and the championship series in each league.
Whoever wins the two leagues would meet for the conference championship.
