quote:

Here is what it has come to: Memphis administrators rooting for others to fail.

That's all they've got left. It's the last refuge of the inept.

quote:

The slogan is supposed to be "Dreamers, thinkers and doers." Instead, it's "Misery loves company."

quote:

The latest indignity: Tulane administrators fired Bob Toledo on Tuesday because they knew that -- with Memphis coming to town this Saturday -- the head coach might be able to prolong his unfortunate tenure with a win.

quote:

Over at Memphis, they're hunkered down and pulling for failure, if only to keep pace with their own.

Larry Porter did come from a big name program such as LSU and was a fine recruiter but he was a position coach. He has never been more than a runningbacks coach throughout his entire career. Prior to that, he was a track and field coach. He has no experience in the passing game. Memphis got burned by a bad hire.

Chalk another one up to political correctness.

Maybe one day PC college presidents and athletic directors will stop trying to prove to the world how socially sensitive they are by hiring unqualified minority coaches. "Great Recruiters" with no head coaching (At any level) or coordinating (At any level) experience rarely make competent Head Coaches. Most are in way over their heads because there's just too much envolved in being a head coach outside of being a "Great Recruiter."

nah, he got hired because of the recruiting. the same reason that Frank Wilson will one day get a head coaching job. he doesn't really have a head coaching resume, and he never will. but, if you can get 3-4 years of great recruiting out of him, you can fire him and bring in a good coach to finish the job.
