Was this stupid network idea worth it?

Longhorn Network News: Texas-ESPN Agree To No High-School Content

This network has got to be going down soon. There is NOTHING on it.

Cue:
...we'll just laugh our asses all the way to the fricking bank with our $300 million.... :longhornhomo:

Ummm.....no you won't:

I don't normally prance around and gloat, but this one is specially deserved. These sips got their assess handed to them and it will all be for NOTHING.

Well, at least we got something out of it.

How exactly is it hurting them?

I disagree. It was a stupid deal, but they will not get paid. Read the agreement. If ESPN can't get the programming it wants, it can give notice and suspend the network WITHOUT PAYING the full contract.

Something that is not being reported very much is that, in exchange for not showing the highlights (not sure Texas really cared too much about that anyway, perhaps ESPN did), the conference agreed that between 2-3 games can be shown on the LHN each year. It's unclear if these are conference games - doubt it, because most would be Tier 1 or Tier 2, but my take is that Texas cares more about this than the high school games. So not really much of a loss.

The longhorns? They are in a position where they MUST stay in the watered-down, weak big 12, with a bunch of other schools who really don't want to be there, but have no options at the moment. Other schools are literally IGNORING overtures to join that POS conference DIRECTLY BECAUSE of the Asshats in Austin.

So, Texas still gets paid more than they would have without the LHN. Correct? How could you possibly say that is negative for them?

If the LHN goes away in 5 years like you are hoping and the Big 12 collapses Texas will find a new home in another conference without suffering any lasting effects from the experiment.

Every SEC fan I know would love to have Texas in our conference if they didn't change any of the revenue issues.

Just what the hell is going to be on this network? A bunch of OOC games? UTSA games? Was it worth all of the mess?

The net result is it's easier to get to a BCS game. Again, how are they hurt by this?

I'm pretty sure most SEC fans don't want them in their conference. They are a cancer and pretty much all division 1 schools/conference know it. The LHN further enhanced that perception. How is that worth the loss of goodwill?

I've read it - can you point me to the clause that allows ESPN to suspend the network without paying its monetary obligations under the contract (i.e., in clause 10a)? Not saying it's not there, just don't remember seeing it written that way.

Mainly the advantage of the opportunity to become independent (or it should be at this point). I'm shocked they're not doing this now.

Well, unlike most on this board I am currently a student at LSU. Everyone I talk to says basically the same thing. If you look at it objectively, they would be a perfect fit in the SEC in the future.

I think ESPN and UT both overestimated how many people outside the state of Texas really give a crap about watching the Longhorns.

Just as long as they stay out of Louisiana. Don't need the Longhorn network or Texas coming here if this Tulane crap is for real.

I don't know if I truly believe the LHN was the sole cause of "this mess." But that's for one of the other millions of threads on this topic....

But to truly answer your question, I would have to be able to get it on DirecTV.

I've watched some clips on Youtube about practices and behind the scenes stuff like that, it's all pretty cool. But for me, I've always been excited about the LHN to be able to watch a lot of baseball games that I would otherwise have to watch on a crappy internet feed. This makes it all worth it to me - maybe I'm in the minority, but I bet LSU fans and A&M baseball fans would understand this. College baseball gets such a short end of the stick on TV.

I agree. I would love to be able to see more baseball games.

I expect that most schools will have networks in the future and the content will be streamed online (like All Access). I don't expect anyone to get a payday like the horns did in the future especially since they are realizing that the value isn't there without more content.
