At the time, the SEC wasn't set on just adding two teams. Most thought it would be Arkansas, Texas, Texas A&M and a Florida school. They publicly discussed going as high as 16.
There were no divisions and nobody had a clue how it was going to work out.
Stating that Arkansas was a "fallback plan" to the Texas schools is a familiar refrain from the Hog-sessed, though.

There was nothing contingent about Arkansas' offer to join the SEC.
Texas and Texas A&M's decision to stay in the SWC didn't impact Arkansas' offer either way.
What you posted has nothing to do with the reality of how it went down.
Specific enough?
well OK, sometimes ones memory plays tricks on them and i guess mine has so i need to man up. so arky was in first. however, even though i get texas politicians names and alma matars all screwed up (just another hit to my cred), the texas legislature did threaten to take away the funding of these schools and that prevented them from joining the sec. and baylor was in there somewhere damit. also, i'm sure i've hated bobby bowden for all these years for the correct reasons.
in short, i apologize for offending the arkansas fans that have kindly corrected me. even though i did say that i was glad they joined the sec and preferred them to texas and fsu. i consider that a compliment.

Not a big deal. I just hear that from some younger fans now and then and it pisses me off.
Most comparisons to the current conference expansion don't work, because that first round was a game changer.
Now its about "which division" do you add to, and "divisional balance" and "which two teams" etc.
Back then it was a "figure it out as you go situation" and nobody knew how the final product would look.
In a lot of ways, the first expansion was the most important one, because that is why we now have Conference Championship Games, more money being thrown around, etc.
It would have worked just as well with 14.
Arkansas got grief from all sides back then. Texans hated us for "blowing up their conference", while a lot of SEC fans didn't like the changes brought about by expansion.
Arkansas took a risk by jumping from its 76-year affiliation and only rivals, and it paid off. It was still a big jump to make, and there were sacrifices that Arkansas made, such as being the newb, throwing away rivalries, close destinations, etc.
So from this side, seeing that it required a lot of change on our part for the expansion in 1991 to happen, it grinds my gears when people get it wrong or claim we were leftovers, second choice, etc etc.
