Like others have said, if you want college football talk in Houston, you have to listen to:

1. 1560AM (Yahoo Sports Radio, headquartered in Houston with penty of LSU coverage on the local shows)
Or

2. 790AM morning show (one of the hosts is a raging UH alum, another is the guy who does "SEC Guy").

The other stations are mostly dedicated to pro sports, because one is tied to the Texans, one to the Astros. The ESPN station on 97.5 is absolute garbage.

I get it that the Texans are the local pro team and have lots of fans but holy crap, throw some other sports a bone. There are a lot of UT, A&M and LSU alum that'd like some local talk about college football.

I can't ever seem to pick up 1560AM while near downtown (where I live and work).

There's no secret for Houston's lack of fan support

Just to add to this argument, SC played UH in the Liberty Bowl in 2006. Columbia and Houston are almost exactly the same distance to Memphis. SC sold out its side and had a lot of fans on Houston's side (including myself).. Houston literally gave away tickets to try and fill out their section because they couldn't sell enough.

Houston's high water mark in football was over 30 years ago, where they won three SWC titles in their first five in the league. They've had a Heisman winner and an Outland winner and they still are basically a Southern Miss level program. Add to that the Elvin Hayes and Phi Slamma Jamma basketball eras. Still struggling for respect as an athletic program though.

A true story. Back in the 70s I worked in Houston and helped with organization of the big boy scout convention held in the Astrohall. That year Houston had already won the SWC, was ranked no. 4 in the country, and was closing the season with Miami, then a doormat. To get a big crowd, they decided that you could attend the Houston game in the Astrodome by showing your ticket to the scoutarama, which cost a buck. So for $1.00, you could see the number 4 team in the country. The attendance? ~19K.

I honestly think that half of the fans at UH games go becuase they sell booze in the stadium.

I went to a 9:15 PM kickoff friday night game there last year and holy hell there were some drunks in that stadium.

I've got A&M season baseball tickets. We host Houston every other year. Those people still sport mullets like it was 1988. They get rowdier as the game goes on. A trip to the mens room will tell you why. The glass pint bottles pile up in there as the game goes on.

I've never gotten how they are allowed to sell alcohol at their games. The only other place I've ever seen alcohol sold on a college campus is the German beer hall at the Wisconsin student union.

Is Houston even that big of a Texans town? From the few games I've seen the stadium leaves in droves after half time and their idea of tailgating is a concrete parking lot. The closest trees are at Rice.

Houston is like Atlanta. A bunch of people from somewhere else who have no interest in local stuff. Not like the Cardinals or SEC teams. No wonder the UH cannot get any respect.

They've only sold out every game since the beginning, despite the fact that the team has basically been garbage.

It because the city paid to build their stadiums waaaay back when and they lease the use back to the university. The city makes most of the money off the beer sales at robertson and the baseball fields in exchange for cheaper rent.

Rice has a bar on campus called Valhalla. It's pretty cheap as well.

I didn't know that. The problem is that when I am in the Rice Village, I inevitably wind up at the Gingerman attempting to drink one of everything on tap.

I know how to walk to it from the baseball stadium but I couldn't tell you which building it's in. 95 cent Shiner draft. I've done Gingerman a lot, I like heading down the street to Under The Volcano or Han's.
