Well, it is east of the Pacific.
quote:

According to sources in the Big East, the conference is looking at a plan in which Boise State, Navy, and Air Force would be invited into the league as members in football only, as well as Temple and Central Florida as members in all sports.

The possibility of adding Villanova as the 12th team in football also is being discussed. If Louisville chooses to stay in the Big East, it would have 12 football members and could begin a conference championship game, which would increase the value of any television contract.

Boise State, which has become a perennial Top 5 team the past several years, is the key.

If the Broncos, who would explore the possibility of joining another conference such as the Missouri Valley or the Western Athletic Conference in all other sports, came to the Big East, they would bring much needed Bowl Championship Series points, which are necessary for the Big East to maintain its automatic BCS berth.

The key for Boise State and for Air Force would be to find a place for the other sports besides football, and that could be the WAC.

And despite their small media marker, Boise State does draw good TV ratings nationally. Half the folks want to see David slay another Goliath, the other half wants to see David get his comeuppance.

Would the WAC take back Boise's non football sports? They just got done screwing the WAC. I'm not entirely convinced WAC members would vote to accept them back partially without requiring Boise to schedule a certain number of their schools in OOC football each year.

They may be forced to invite Boise State in order to keep their AQ bid. What other school would pad their resume like Boise State would?

How about Central Florida vs. Boise in that championship game? Would they play in Cleveland or something?

That is a complete mess.

I think their non football sports would join the WCC, with BYU's.

WCC is the west coast conference, for those that don't know.

"All of the current members are private, faith-based institutions: seven are Catholic Church affiliates. One (Pepperdine) is an affiliate of the Churches of Christ and another (Brigham Young University) is an affiliate of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Four of the seven Catholic schools are Jesuit affiliates."

9 religious colleges + 1 community college.

Didn't the Ohio State President say they were a member of the Little Sisters of the Poor?

A school can't play their non-revenue sports in a conference that offers football and play their football in another conference. It's against NCAA rules, and because of that Boise can't play their other sports in the WAC. The author must have meant the WCC. Either way, the mistake strains the credibility of the article.

WAC commissioner is a Boise State grad. That may help their case.

Are you sure about that? I remember last year reading that the Big East initially offered TCU a football-only bid.

They have a commissioner? What on earth does he do?

I see he's been there since 1994. Might be time to breath new life in the WAC.

Assuming that they are allowed by NCAA rules to have football only in 1 conference and football in another conference that has football, I still don't get why WAC teams would vote to allow them BACK into the conference unless Boise gives some concession like being required to schedule a couple of OOC games each year with WAC teams.

If Boise does go to the Big East this really does not solve their problem of being in a power conference.

Boise is looking to get into a conference that will give them more credibility in football; however, with the Big East power players leaving, the Big East will not be an improvement from where they are now.

What it will get them is a much easier road to BCS bowls, more TV exposure and presumably more TV revenues. They would no longer be required to have a perfect season to get a BCS bid. Last year, they were one missed field goal shy of a perfect season and ended up in the Las Vegas Bowl.

You're assuming the BE keeps their BCS bid.

Boise has an easy road now. They have been in a BCS bowl 3 of 6 years. Likely will this year.
