Why did Pete Carroll fire Kris Richard?

After 2017, Carroll fired Richard and hired Ken Norton Jr.
Is there a reason why?

Because Seacocks defense got worse every year. Needed a scapegoat.

He suggested Pete take up smoking to help him kick the gum habit.

Is that what the consensus is? Even an article I read said it was "puzzling"

There's nothing puzzling about it. Go look at their numbers. It considerably declined. Whether that was KR's fault or a bunch of players aging/getting hurt is anyone's guess.

They aged and there's the odd dynamic between that defense and Wilson/Carroll after the Malcolm Butler pick.

The defense aged, was injury riddled, and Carroll wasn't firing himself. Didn't deserve to lose his job.

who cares? Just because a coach gets fired in the NFL doesn't meant he can't coach in college. He is obviously a good coach.

The year he got fired, they dropped from like 4or 5 to 16th. The reason was some left but mostly because of injuries depleting the defense. Carroll has to show GM and owner he was man for job and had to sacrifice a scapegoat

Wasn’t his last year there when they ranked number 1 in defense
As the defensive coordinator for the Seahawks, Richard's defense ranked first in points allowed for the 2015 season, third in 2016 and thirteenth in 2017. Never mind that was his first year but still thirteenth isn’t bad

I know this doesn’t have anything to do with the question, but if people point to Carroll firing Richard as a reason for LSU not to pursue him ...
Pete Carroll hired Brian Schottenheimer to be his OC.
They have Russell Wilson. But they hired Schotty. So they can run the ball. With Russell Wilson as their quarterback.

Beacause turning your hat backwards and running around ain’t enough

A difference in philosophy. Pete felt it was time KR found a place that suited his aggressive philosophy. The dude blitzed too much. The opposite of aranda’s problem. And the defense dropped because of injuries

This is awesome. In another thread people are saying he doesn’t like to blitz and relies on 4 to get pressure
