SMU has offered Hawaii coach June Jones between $1.7 million and $2 million to become its football coach, according to two sources.

Hawaii may want to start pumping some cash back in their program for recruiting and facilities, like now.

I like the old Pony Express.
I was on the field for the coin toss with Eric Dickerson and Craig James a few years back. They were playing Navy, anyone want to guess who was the former Navy QB that was there for the toss?

This just proves how valuable a head coaching job in college is right now. SMU paying 2 million a year gets guys like Terry Bowden, Dennis Franchione, June Jones, Mike Martz, Larry Coker interested.

Hawaii is much better than Dallas. To quote Hank Hill:
Dallas? I don't want you goin' to Dallas at all. That place is crawlin' with crack-heads and debutantes, and half of 'em play for the Cowboys

SMU coeds driving around in the beemer that daddy gave them
The poor ones have beemers. The Range Rover is preferred. I saw more than a few Mercedes and other high end cars being driven during my year in grad school at SMU.

Anyone remember Jeff George screaming on the sideline at JJ in Atlanta? Dont remember the details, but remember it wasnt long after that and JJ was gone.
Wasnt it a scandal that broke SMU up? I dont recall what went down..
I remember that Jeff George had a short tenure after that as well. He went to Oakland where old careers go to die.
SMU had a bizarre play-for-pay scandal. It involved a sitting TX governor who had been on the SMU board. For many years there was a system of off the books payments made to athletes. The governor stated that he knew of the payments but did not think it was fair to cut off those to whom the commitment was made. The evidence of size, duration, and institutional involvement was enough to merit the death penalty.
I saw an SMU Football t-shirt in Dallas during that time with an upside down mustang.

SMU has no shot at Jones?

Maybe he's looking to get himself setup for retirement.

Hawaii coach June Jones will travel to Dallas today and speak with SMU officials this weekend, according to a source with knowledge of the school's search for a new football coach.....
Steinberg confirmed Friday that he and Jones are in discussions with SMU. Hawaii defensive coordinator Greg McMackin, a former Texas Tech coordinator, is expected to make the trip with Jones, according to a source with knowledge of SMU's search.
Steinberg said Jones received permission from Hawaii to explore other options shortly before Christmas.

how big was SMU football back in the day? were they on par with the other big Texas schools?
Missed your post there. IMO they were best program in Texas at the time. UT was down after Royal had retired as coach. I think they were ranked #2 when Dickerson and James were there.

The quality of youth and High School football is growing in Hawaii. It has become a favorite sport among Polynesian and Samoan youths. If the growth continues Hawaii could be a leader in per capita production of major college and NFL players.
If the university won't invest in facilities a lot of those kids are going to go to Pac Ten programs. Jones delivered but there's only so much you can do without administrative support.
