Ultimately that is the only factor that will decide a coach's remunerations.

Those days are gone when schools used to be loyal to a coach or vice-versa. It is a purely business now - if he meets their requirements at his price they have a deal.

What does the school base their requirements on?
- sale of tickets (gate)
- sale of merchandise
- funds from friends of the program (alumnus, local businesses, etc...)
- keep the program relatively clean with minimal off the field issues.
- try to maintain a semblance of importance for academics
- don't personally get caught in embarrassing activities (illegal or otherwise) that would damage the school's rep.

Whether you like it or not , during Les' HC-ship, the revenue has either grown, or given the stagnant economy, at least maintained status quo.

In this case schools, being typically conservative financially, tend to go with a known commodity (even if it means a raise) rather than risk the unknown.
