Last time a successful Texas coach was fired (Fred Akers)

After Akers was forced to resign, they went through David McWilliams and John Mackovic before succeeding with Mack Brown. Had Dodds gotten his way, they would have hired Gary Barnett (Northwestern) in 1998.
