Big difference between being HC and an OC
If Malzahn was the HC of Auby your argument would make sense
Malzahn also had stops at Arky and Tulsa before Auburn
TU went the cheap route on this hire

Bill is from Oklahoma, played and coached at Tulsa and built Tulsa Union into the national power it is today. He averaged 10 wins a year over a 20 year span. I think Tulsa went with trying to hire someone they might have a chance at keeping around once they win. Bill has been in Oklahoma playing and coaching since he first started football, most of that time in Tulsa.

They also lost their OC
They play Boise St, Oklahoma and Oklahoma St next year
Going to be a huge step back next year after a big step forward this year

I think they are tired of losing any coach that has success there. Tulsa is Blankenship's home and has been very long time. I am not saying he would not go as well but I think they want some with more direct ties and feelings for the city. Tulsa is kind of unique in the fact that even though they are a small private school they have some benefits of getting very good transfers from OU, OSU and Arkansas. They also have 2 of the best high school programs in the country in the city of Tulsa (Tulsa Union/Jenks) and they can get a lot of good players from those 2 schools. They have won a lot with this formula. Blankenship will do well there. Too bad he could not keep that OC around though because he was doing well after Malzahn left. Bill's style at Union was more of pro offense but they scored a lot of points and he produced a ton of good players there.

Tulsa will still be able to get a lot of quality players from OU, OSU transfers. Bill should be able to do well recruiting in Tulsa as well. OU and OSU are always going to get the top guys that stay in state but Tulsa will still get a lot of quality athletes.
