Considering Kiffin’s past connections with Alabama, and the potential that he may want to try to coach there someday if possible, the Auburn job specifically is a particularly bad fit for him. Taking that job and having any success would basically close the door on him ever having a shot to coach at Bama. Taking this job wouldn’t.
Not knocking this, because it’s a well thought out consideration.
I do think the draw to Alabama is overblown though. He was extremely successful there, but Saban was a dick and made things much harder than they needed to be on him. He also wanted to finish out the season and win another championship but Saban and the admin pushed him out. While it was a great rehab for him, I doubt he looks back on those days as fondly as he would had they treated him better.
I get that was a potential consideration for Auburn, as Alabama would have been a step up job that he could have coveted down the road.
But if he’s succeeding enough at LSU for Alabama to come calling, it doesn’t represent enough of a step up from LSU imo for that to be a concern for us in deciding to bring him on board.
This isn’t a UT/USC situation where Lane loved his time there so unquestionably and regretted ever leaving in the first place like at SC. Alabama was a step on his path back to HCing, it wasn’t home and the place he saw himself long term in a way that would make him want to go back if he is succeeding at a similar level of school

Rumors are rumors. A contract offer means things have advanced into a goal-to-go situation. You don't make an offer unless you know what needs to generally go in there.
