Do people really think G5 and lower P5 coaches don't recruit?

They recruit from the same schools as the elite programs. They go to the same camps. They talk to and have relationships with the same high school coaches.

They have other challenges, such as projecting a developmental player several years down the road.

This is not meant to promote any specific coach, but the idea that a successful coach can't recruit 5-stars just because he was at a lower level is ludicrous.

Despite their poor on-the-field showing, Mike Norvell has Florida State at No. 13 in Recruiting on Rivals with two 5-Stars, tied for second in the country.

There are several other former G5 coaches doing well in recruiting.

Wait wait wait, the guy at Memphis who consistently recruited in the 50s-80s is recruiting well at FSU?

There are still litmus tests that you can run. Does a coach at a lower-tier recruit better than his schools historical average? That’s valuable data that can translate. It shows work and a level of talent that exceeds the typical guy at that school.

You mentioned Norvel. He’s a great example of this. He recruited much better than the average at Memphis and far better than Fuente. He was top 3 in G5 consistently, so we just see that translating pretty well to the larger program.

You also need to look at their recruiting track record elsewhere. Many of these lower-tier coaches were position coaches and coordinators at larger programs. It’s easy to look back and see how guys who held such positions recruited and how successful they were playing in the bigger pool.
