It seems like a lot of these coaching decisions happened with just informal conversations between the candidates and ADs or with conversations between ADs and agents

When people know each other that’s typically what happens

The guys that aren't going to get the job are the ones that interview.

I believe their interview, or resume, is based on what they do on the field and how much hardware they have acquired.
Could you imagine someone wanting to hire Saban or Meyer and asking them to come in for a sit down 1 on 1 interview first. "So Nick, what makes you think you would be a good fit here?"

their resume is their main interview. AD's use seach firms to gauge interest by a certain list of desirable coaches. this is done through their agents. a preliminary process weeds out those that simply are not interested in moving at the time needed. interviews optional; most coaches don't want to interview; they pay their agent a shite load of money to do that.

At LSU, the AD won’t even board a plane to meet a prospective Head Football Coach, and will Limit his search to two candidates.
