DeWayne Walker update

UCLA defensive coordinator DeWayne Walker will come to Las Cruces on Monday to interview for the head football coaching position at New Mexico State University, according to reports in the Los Angeles Daily News.

Walker will meet administration, take a tour of the campus and get a feel for what could possibly await him if he does become the next coach of the Aggies. The report states that Walker is the lead candidate to fill the position.

NMSU Athletics Director McKinley Boston could not be reached for comment.

The Sun-News reported earlier this week that Walker, Texas Christian University offensive coordinator Mike Schultz and a third, unidentified candidate were the three finalists to fill NMSU's vacant coaching position.

Walker was a finalist to take over at San Diego State University earlier this month before the job went to Brady Hoke, a former Ball State University head coach. Walker served as UCLA's interim coach last year and was considered for the head position before it went to Rick Neuheisel, a former University of Washington head coach, prior to the 2008 campaign.

The Bruins' defense ranked sixth in the Pac-10 conference last season, but the number was deceiving. UCLA averaged just 17.7 points per game, eighth in the 10-team division, putting pressure on Walker's unit to carry a heavy burden most weeks. He is considered to be one of the brightest assistant coaches in the business.
