...then I would suggest Chris Klieman from Kansas State.
Tomorrow he plays Baylor, who'll be in perfect letdown mode. And the game is in Manhattan.
The week after that he goes to Texas.
He could very easily be 9-3 at the end of the season, which would mean he's put K-State into the Top 25. They were 5-7 in 2018, the year before he got there. His three losses were at Oklahoma State, at home to Oklahoma (37-31), and at home to Iowa State. Those all came in a row; since then they've won four straight.
Klieman has gone 8-5, 4-6 and he's now 7-3 this year, in his three years at Kansas State. He beat Oklahoma in both 2019 and last year.
Before Kansas State, Klieman was the head coach at North Dakota State. He had that job for five years. What did he do there? Well...
North Dakota State Bison (Missouri Valley Football Conference) (2014–2018)
2014 North Dakota State 15–1 7–1 T–1st W FCS National Championship 1 1
2015 North Dakota State 13–2 7–1 T–1st W FCS National Championship 1 1
2016 North Dakota State 12–2 7–1 T–1st L FCS Semi-finals 3 3
2017 North Dakota State 14–1 7–1 1st W FCS National Championship 1 1
2018 North Dakota State 15–0 8–0 1st W FCS National Championship 1 1
North Dakota State: 69–6 36–4
Klieman doesn't coach the Air Raid offense like Riley and some of these other guys do; they run the ball a good bit. That's because the best player on their offense is the tailback. When he had Carson Wentz at North Dakota State they threw it around some.
He came up as a defensive backs coach and a defensive coordinator. You'd want to put a big-time offensive coordinator with him. His defenses at K-State have been pretty good - they're giving up 340 yards and 21 points a game this year, which in the Big 12 is pretty good. By comparison, Aranda is giving up 20 ppg and 354 ypg at Baylor.
I can't say a lot for him as a recruiter, because how in the hell do you get top-flight players to Manhattan, Kansas? He's taken nothing but 3-star kids, except for one 4-star quarterback he signed last year. He does seem to find and develop players, though. Wentz was one. Jabril Cox was another.
Klieman will probably be the biggest up-and-coming name in college coaching this time next year.
LSU isn't hiring Bill O'Brien. LSU is going to hire somebody we've already talked about. But if you want to throw in somebody from out of the blue, here - go look at this guy.
