I don't think he's a coaching God, but I do think he's an excellent coach and will have a highly successful career.

With all the hype he's received, there is certainly very little risk that he's underrated. But there are no holes in his resume yet. Criticizing the schedule doesn't account for the fact that the AAC teams are UH's peer group. It's not fair to say that LSU or most P5 teams would have gone 11-1 against that schedule. That means nothing.

Herman took effectively the same team that went 8-5 last year (and needed a miracle finish in its bowl to get 8 wins) and has won 11 games. That's pretty impressive. Bear in mind that UH beat Vandy 34-0; look at how Vandy played Ole Miss and Florida before you scoff.

And what most folks outside of Houston can't appreciate is that the guy has effectively changed the culture of the team in a single year. He's not only smart in an X's and O's sense, but he understands how to motivate players, instill personal pride, and develop team unity.

Is he the next Bill Walsh? Probably not, but is that really the standard?

Just because Sumlin is a coaching fraud doesn't mean Herman is. Herman was recruiter of the year for the B1G, Broyles winner for best coordinator, won a national championship as OC with a third stringer QB, and is a member of MENSA.

Sumlin accomplished nothing like that and had a reputation as a drunk.

Herman is probably more fairly compared to former Houston head coach Art Briles.

Fuente took the most godawful team I'm FBS and turned them into an almost identical team to UH and he doesn't get the Herman hype on this board.

Probably because Herman took a 3rd string QB (who is a shell of himself this year) and won a national championship. Sure, Meyer deserves some of the credit, but look how OSU fared this year without Herman. Obviously, all of their struggles aren't due to Herman's departure, but he definitely deserves meaningful credit for their success.

And when you couple his work at OSU with his immediate, break-out success at UH, he becomes the hottest commodity out there.

Fuentes may be better than Herman, but it's hard to say he's enjoyed a comparable last 2 years. And, heck, Fuentes was hired by Va Tech; that's a pretty nice gig. No one is sleeping on him.

The starting QB did not play in the UConn game.

Probably because Fuente has never been a recruiter at a big time school and he has never coached in a NC game.
Herman has done this including organizing a game plan for the team that was running its 3rd string quarterback. He is highly intelligent and comes from a great football background.

Fuente is the next super star coach. His body of work is really impressive. Herman I just gotta see at least 2-3 more seasons of consistency before I'm sold on him. The cup board wasn't bare at Houston that's for sure.

Conference Champions and a trip to a New Year's 6 Bowl Game..

Beat every ranked opponent that played his team.

2014 PPG: 29.0 (53rd in the Nation)
2015 PPG: 42.0 (T-7th in the Nation)

Top 15 in Rushing yards per game
Top 25 in Scoring Defense

Should've been undefeated if their QB was not hurt.

But, I'm sure anyone could've walked in to a 7 win team and done the same thing though right?

Overrated?

Fuente had a qb that's probably going to be the first qb taken in the draft. 6'7", 250 with a cannon

You don't think Fuente deserves some credit for that?

Just for everyone in this thread that is saying Herman is Sumlin 2.0. Because I am intelligent I base my opinions of facts and data on hand.

Sumlin depends on his coordinators(like most coaches should) his OC at Houston and Texas A&M his first year was Kliff Kingsbury.

So Herman=Sumlin 2.0 is so off base. If anything.

Herman=Kingsbury 2.0

he's just one of this years "coach de jur" that has been ordained by some as being the next great up and coming coaching genius. this stuff happens every year and it's a differernt guy or two every year.

remember kevin sumlin's year? Charlie strong?

he may be the real deal but I doubt it. I damn sure wouldn't take one year of results and declare him anything.
