I saw the movie The Other (1972) for the first time when I was around 9 years old. They used to play it on regular TV a lot in the 70's and I watched it several times and really enjoyed the creepiness factor to it.

When I was young, I always thought that there were supernatural things occurring in the plot (Holland was a ghost, "the game" was some kind of extrasensory projection, etc.) however I recently re-watched this movie and determined that there were no supernatural elements, which actually made the story quite more terrifying. I decided to read the book (which had been on my bucketlist for years anyway) to see if there were any additional clues, and although it's open to interpretation, I still think there is nothing supernatural going on.

The book is actually very good, set in the mid-1930s, and is about an extended family living on a remote farm in Connecticut, where tragic events begin occurring. I won't say more since it would add spoilers, but if you like somewhat slow-burning psychological thrillers, I highly recommend it.

I remember growing up in the 70's and seeing a movie, The Reincarnation of Peter Proud. Sort of messed with me at the time.

That vaguely rings a bell. I may need to check that out.

Tom Tryon began as an actor. He's best remembered for playing the title role in Otto Preminger's The Cardinal

I remember reading somewhere that Tyron hated working with Otto Preminger on this. I'm not sure if this is what drove him out of acting and into writing.

There was nothing supernatural going on in respect to the murders occurring on the farm. Niles is insane and is doing the killing, blaming it on his dead brother. The game their grandmother taught them was a sort of astral projection, but I took it as being more about imagination than the supernatural.

Thomas Tryon also wrote another great horror novel called Harvest Home.

Supposedly Tryon had a birthday party on the set w/his parents attending. And there, on the set, in front of the cast and crew, in front of Tryon's parents... Preminger fired him.

He did hire him back, so I guess it's all right.

My teacher was out there and I appreciate that.
I remember it well.

I can't imagine my 8th grade English teacher selecting this .

We read The Hobbit, which I had no complaints with.
