Any good? I've seen where there's 35 books in this series? Worth starting?

I never heard of them until now. The description sounds somewhat interesting.

quote:

The series is inspired by science fantasy pulp fiction works by Edgar Rice Burroughs, such as the Barsoom series.
I love the Barsoom series. But the next part of the description.....
quote:

It also includes erotica and philosophy content. The Gor series repeatedly depicts men abducting and physically and sexually brutalizing women, who grow to enjoy their submissive state.
That doesn't sound like my cup of tea.

Still, I found the first one online free to read so I may give it a shot and see for myself.

Sounds like the series that Groo (the comics) was written to make fun of

I read the first book. It was a fun pulp romp. There wasn't really anything explicitly erotic or that bad in my opinion, but I would assume the author was into some BDSM. I could see how it could get a bit wild as the series goes on, but book 1 was pretty tame overall.

First book ok at best, after that it is by book 3 to much the same thing, I stopped reading at that point. That was close to 40 years ago.

Yea I made it through the 4th. It got pretty bad. Not so much the repetitiveness, but the extreme focus on chaining and subjugating women and how all women love to be chained and enslaved.

But it got me primed for a decent set of pulp sword and planet books. Jandar of Callisto is a far better series to me. It is very close to the Barsoom books and the writer is better. It's still pulp but I like it much more. Currently two books in.

I always thought they were pretty good, I prefer Tarl Cabot as the protagonist. I haven’t read any of the new ones, only the ones published in the 80s and before.
