I’m about halfway through right now. It’s a well written and interesting book.

Pretty awesome that this book was written in 1992 as it is very relevant today and probably will be even more relevant in the future.

This quote is fantastic:

quote:

Now I have a different perspective on it. America must look, to those poor little buggers down there, about the same as Crete looked to those poor Greek suckers. Except that there's no coercion involved. Those people down there gve up their children willingly. Send them into the labyrinth by the millions to be eaten up. The industry feeds on them and spits them back images, sends out wealth and exotics things beyond their wildest dreams, back to the people, and it gives them something to dream about, something to aspire to. And that is the function of the Raft. It's just a big old krill carrier

I could do without YT being 15 because the sexual innuendos and situations get uncomfortable

I read it when it came out in '92 (at 12 yrs old) and at the risk of sounding cliché it changed my life, encouraged me to get even more into IT / computers which ended up pointing me towards my career.

Its fantastic, one of Stephenson's best in my opinon.

Stephenson is a serious genius.

I love all of his work, but Snow Crash is definitely one of his most accessible and practical.

Seveneves is probably my favorite, though I really need to do the Baroque Cycle again, as I absolutely loved it, even if it's pretty challenging.

The Baroque cycle is probably my second favorite behind snow crash that I've read by him, though I haven't read seveneves or cryptonomicon.

Definitely my favorite of his, he's one of the few authors that I will always buy when a new one comes out.

One thing that may not be obvious is how funny and tongue in cheek he is at times And how much social satire there is. At least I missed it on the first read of several of his books, Snowcrash included. Cryptonomicon was a bit of a struggle the first time through but is one of my favorites to re-read, in large part because of the humor. His latest, Termination Shock, is about global warming and I really hated the beginning until I re-thought it and realized how much he was goofing around.

Pretty sure Amazon bought the rights to do a show for it a while ago. Haven't heard anything recently.

Actually looks like HBO has it now.

I enjoyed watching Neal Stephenson on Lex Fridman back in November. Both are a bit awkward (lots of smart people are) but it's a good conversation.

The Movie “Free Guy” borrowed heavily from this book and its themes.

That’s a god awful movie by the way
