My new year's resolution is to read 50 books this year. I have so many unread books piled up and typically neglect them in favor of the internet or podcasts. Once I start a book, I can't put it down; it's starting that has become difficult. Does anyone have a similar resolution? Any tips to stay on track?

Wikipedia - Tsundoku

quote:

Tsundoku (Japanese: ???) is acquiring reading materials but letting them pile up in one's home without reading them.

The term originated in the Meiji era (1868–1912) as Japanese slang. It combines elements of tsunde-oku (?????, to pile things up ready for later and leave) and dokusho (??, reading books). It is also used to refer to books ready for reading later when they are on a bookshelf. As currently written, the word combines the characters for "pile up" (?) and the character for "read" (?).

I first learned this word from a Gad Saad Tweet sharing this article; there are some good tips in there:

Interesting. I do the same. I need to start plowing through. My goal is to get through 2 books a month. I'd love to get up to 50...

I do this on my kindle because of book bub. Can’t pass up good deals but I buy them way faster than I can read them.

I need to start using my local library more and lay off of the impulse-buys.

A lot of people have recommended Kindle/audiobooks, but to me there's just something great about turning the pages of a real book.

I mainly use audible and go through about 2 books a month usually. I’m starting this year off with Shogun. It’s 53 hours long so I may not 2 done this month.

I'm kicking my year off by reading The Godfather. I've always been curious to know if the movies remained true to the book. So far, I've found that while the movies stick very closely to the book, the book goes into a lot more detail about people who are minor characters at best in the movie. I'm about halfway through and am enjoying it so far.

I will try audible one of these days. I'm sure it's good for long car rides, but I usually prefer to listen to a podcast or the radio.

I use Goodreads book reading challenge to keep track of the books I read. My goal last year was 40 but ended up reading 52. This year my goal is down to 36, I just don't have as much time.

I’ve been using audible literally since they started. I was getting books on cd for years before that from the library. I’ve become addicted to audiobooks. LOL

I've got a serious pile up from books I bought years ago. Part of the problem is alot are from series, and they aren't the first books, so I gotta read the others first

I strictly do audiobooks now. Cuts out the clutter. I get through 40-50 books a year.
