I just finished the Alexandria Quartet, which is considered his masterpiece. He's definitely an underrated 20th century British writer.
Durrell treats the city of Alexandria as almost a living being in the novels, and although a world away, his characters and his own narration feel very similar to relationship locals have with New Orleans (the good and the bad). I reread my Kindle highlights and realized many of them could be any New Orleanian describing the Crescent City and our oddity as an American city and the multitude or colorful characters within.
Although his Baroque and magniloquent writing style might be a turnoff for many readers, it is a shame that he is mostly forgotten and not mentioned with the other great novelists of the 20th century.
Definitely worth a read. Curious the thoughts from anyone else who has read Durrell.
