I loved red seas, "maritime fantasy" books tends to be just absolutely terrible and rote and that one worked really well for me.

3 for me was the one that didnt really hit home. It was definitely needed and did a lot for moving the story forward but it seemed almost unnecessary outside of bringing what's her face into the fold and giving some backstory. Like in 1 and 2, the story / conflict was central to the main characters and in 3 it kind of seemed secondary to me.

I get that. But Red Seas just seemed choppy to me. Like he did t know if he wanted wrote a pirate story or a casino heist. Think it would have worked better as 2 separate stories.

The thing I don't get is the defense from other authors. If you're going to write a series, then write it. By not finishing it you are making it that much harder for the next guy who has a good series and would actually finish it because readers won't take a chance on the first book.

True. I don’t start series anymore unless they are complete. The lone exception right now is The Expanse, but those guys have been really consistent with getting books out and there is only one left to go

The other argument would be that rushing a finish when you don't feel good about the story lines / characters, don't know where to go with the story to end it and those kind of things would also be pretty damaging to the genre.

Oh I completely agree. I’d rather an author take his or her time and do it right than rush an unsatisfying ending (see the GoT tv show).

But there is enough out there to read that I can wait now wait for a series to be complete before starting.

Ya, I'm the same way. Although I have picked up Stormlight and Gentleman Bastards given the reviews that got and that I would enjoy re-reading as books come out.

I don't see how anything short of the pyramids can be considered "rushed" after 8.5 years.

I thought I could get a satisfactory fix from his outrigger short book "Upon Moving Inanimate Objects From Their Previously Perfect Place, Placing Them in Their New Perfect Place, Just So, Then Deciding It Was Probably, No, Definitely Better In Previous Place, and Then Moving It Back There" I soured on he man. That was, what, five years ago?

Rumor on the nerd sites I frequent is that he was told to hold it until planned TV/movie/merchanding can catch up.

Another update, Showtime is no longer developing the King killer TV show, which was to be a prequel.

I'm pretty disappointed that the show is a prequel.
