Anyone know much about author Joseph J. Ellis? He is one of the "experts" appearing in History Channel's Washington mini-series. He sounds authoritative, I see he has written more than a couple books on the American Revolution and the leaders thereof as well as early days of the Republic.

He won a Pulitzer and a National Book Award, and is an endowed chair of history at Mount Holyoke.

His wikipedia bio implicates him in controversies, one of which involved the Thomas Jefferson-Sally Hemmings debate in which he speculated was not supported by history, until DNA evidence was collected and analyzed indicating it likely did happen. Ellis came out after that stating with DNA confirmation he was revising his position on the matter.

I have not read any of his works and am considering purchasing for the Library at work.

I've read 'American Sphinx' and 'Founding Brothers'. Both are very good books.

Ellis got in trouble in his Mount Holyoke teaching days for claiming to serve with the 101st Airborne in Vietnam. Though he was in the Army, he was never sent to Vietnam. The college suspended him for a year. That said, he is a very good historical writer. I see on his Wikipedia that he's retired from Mount Holyoke.

I will never understand why/how people do this shite. I mean the insecure teen or fricked up drug addict or alcoholi, sure, but an accomplished writer and scholar whose career is based on credibility? Wtf.

He taught at the US Military Academy during his Vietnam Army years. For a history professor, that should have been enough to name-drop for extra teaching cred. Guess he thought no one would check on that in the early days of the Internet?

I have some misgivings about most academics, these days. But he sounded eminently reasonable during History Channel's Washington. And, if he taught at West Point, that redeems him a bit, too.

We have a solid history section, here, in the 973s (Dewey) but I am always looking for newer writings in that area.

Thank you all for the responses.
