Read this about a year ago and though it was awesome. Very Raw story of French front line soldier on the western front.

those two books and then the full podcast series is really the best WW1 starter pack I can think of.
edit - it also depends on what you're interested in. there are a lot of books about the drudgery and misery of the front - all quiet, storm of steel, etc. they're good books. however, if you're interested in the larger strategic picture of what led to the war and how it played out, then guns of august and a world undone are your best starting place.
