Nothing out there is quite like RPO for its tying in of nostalgia and sci-fi.
I will second the Vorkosigan Saga as something that has humor, relies on the wit of its protagonist, and is Sci-fi. I would start with the first Miles book (The Warrior's Apprentice) as he is the main protagonist of the saga. If you like it then you can go back and read the one book about his parents, which is basically a set up story for his birth.
