I’m in a car ten hours a week so length does not bother me one bit. I’m looking for something like a Wikipedia page that covers all the major mafia families from start to finish if such a book exist. Not looking for a one off book about a hit man or something along those lines. I’ve realized I know nothing about the mafia and I’m fascinated by them.

I know it it is fiction, loosely based on real people and events, but The Godfather is as great as the movie (and you pick up more when you watch 1 and 2).

Thank you. That’s what I’m looking for. Definitely want non/fiction. Looks like Five Families it is.

Yep, for an initiate, Raab's book should be the first off the shelf.

AMC's excellent "The Making of the Mob" (Season 1) relied heavily on Raab. That had a ton of sources (from Sopranos actors, to Rudy Giuliani who ended up on screen), but for all practical purposes, Raab was to that series what Ambrose was to Band of Brothers.

If you want something with a Louisiana connection, look for Mafia Kingfish by John H. Davis. About Carlos Marcello and his (alleged) ties to the JFK assassination.

Definitely start with that.

From there, you can go into other books based off of what families sounded the most interesting in that 5 families book.

The books are cheap also

Wiseguy (basis for Goodfellas) and Casino (basis for the film) are both very good Nicolas Pileggi books. I Heard You Paint Houses (basis for The Irishman) is also good. Three Scorsese movies.

Boss of Bosses is good. Written by the two FBI agents who ended up arresting Paul Castellano.
